Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is characterized by fluctuations in mood that can range from severe depression to feelings of euphoria, and everything in between. Bipolar disorder, previously called “Manic-Depression” is now recognized as a spectrum of moods; sometimes people experience predominantly depression (Bipolar 2), depression with episodes of feelings of mild euphoria, called hypomania (Bipolar with Mixed Features), or extreme euphoria with delusions and even loss of touch with reality, known as mania (Bipolar 1). These fluctuations in mood can occur over a period of weeks or months.

Effects on your life:
Bipolar disorder can affect all areas of our lives and can be confusing. Sometimes the depression associated with bipolar disorder can be so deep that we don’t feel like living, and the hypomanic or manic feelings can get us into trouble in our personal and professional lives and can result in legal implications.

Symptoms of hypomania and mania:
The symptoms of the depressive part of bipolar disorder are similar to what we would call unipolar depression, or major depression. Symptoms of hypomania can be an increase in irritability, grandiose attitudes, impulsive behaviors like spending money recklessly, or lack of need for sleep. As the hypomanic feelings increase to more manic symptoms, we start to become paranoid, and begin to think irrational or delusional thoughts like we have special abilities or powers.

Treatment at MindVibe:
Treatment for bipolar disorder typically requires medication to control symptoms, and treating bipolar disorder requires proper training and diagnosis, as the medications used for bipolar disorder are often different than medications used for depression. Our experienced providers can help determine the proper diagnosis with your specific concerns in mind.
Living With Bipolar Disorder
Symptoms can vary from person to person and can vary over time, and increase with stress. Like many mental health disorders, bipolar disorder can be genetic and may run in families. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, and if left untreated, it will usually worsen. At MindVibe we offer effective treatment for bipolar disorder, which includes medication management, the early identification of symptoms, and education regarding the importance of maintaining a regular schedule, and a healthy lifestyle.
Reasons You Should See a Mental Health Professional at MindVibe
Symptoms of bipolar disorder can be difficult to identify. It can be difficult to recognize how much these symptoms are disrupting your life and the lives of those around you, preventing you from receiving the treatment you need. Although you may enjoy the feelings of euphoria, these feelings can be followed by relationship, legal, or financial trouble, which can worsen symptoms of depression. Receiving treatment at MindVibe by a mental health professional who has experience treating bipolar disorder can help you get your symptoms under control.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
There are several types of bipolar and related disorders, however, the most common types are:

Bipolar I Disorder
Bipolar I Disorder is characterized by at least one manic episode, followed by a depressive or hypomanic episode. These manic episodes can be severe enough to significantly disrupt your daily functioning, cause psychosis (a break from reality), and require hospitalization.

Bipolar II Disorder
Bipolar II disorder is characterized by depressive episodes which shift back and forth with hypomanic episodes. Although hypomania is a less severe form of mania, it can still have an impact on your daily life.
